When one sees in one's stream something to which one wants to pay no attention

Problem: One sees in one's stream something to which one wants to pay no attention.
Google's solutions:
1. The user unfollows the poster of that content.
Is this a solution? If that's one's only connection to the poster, the two of them might never communicate again.
2. If the poster has posted in a collection, the user unfollows the collection.
It works sometimes.
What should we do in all other cases?
I think a filter matrix were a step forward. We can create a page with several filter types.
I suggest some design principles:
Let people group (e.g. filtering) parameters as they please in any number of sets with different value combinations and (de)activate what sets they want when they want!
Let people create activation patterns with various schedules! This can replace some manual activations.
An event from the same application or from another application can trigger any number of activations and / or deactivations, and the other way around.
Some results:
You like more the quality of the information you process.
You communicate and collaborate more smoothly.
